How to Use Twitter to Get Targeted Traffic?

I have heard a lot about using Twitter to get targeted audience to your website / blogs. I haven't had any great success with Twitter.

How about you guys? Can you share your experience with Twitter?

Also, do you just add the twitterfeed or create your tweets yourself?

One of the ways that might work is asking a "powerful user" to retweet your tweets. One case study by Jennifer of SEOmoz shows that this might be good for you..

James I can tell you first hand the benefits in using twitter for referral traffic exist, but it depends on how you approach it. I did a test and noticed that simply posting link after link referencing pages from your site does not encourage users to go there as much as posting a helpful tip and building relationships through actual conversation. When I retweeted helpful tips from serious marketers they showed the appreciation by visiting my homepage tweeting that page and also sharing it on facebook. So basically it's more important to engage in thank you's and retweets in addition to posting your links to get that targeted referral traffic to your site.

It also makes more sense to mutually tweet to active users. They're more likely to investigate what if anything is valuable about your tweets. But whatever you do, try not to flood the followers feed with link after link. At least that's what's been working for me. My site traffic has increased using this method.

You can tweet your content with in 140 characters and can make it so attractive and informative so that your targeted visitors come across that stay for forever and make a presence of it by retweeting your tweet. You can share your brand's or website's link and can get promoted by Twitter.

I think twitter is not useful for each and every type of business. It works better in case of personal blogs or news related contents. Still to get the best you need to tweet about the important and interesting stuff and not every post.

Engage your followers. Don’t just see them as a passive list of eyeballs! Treat folks as human beings and you will do much better at this stuff. It is called social media for a reason.
